Phantom Blade Zero Beginner’s Guide: Tips Before You Start
Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player action RPG from S-GAME, made in Unreal Engine 5. It launched on October 29, 2026 at 10:00 Beijing time (October 28 in the US) for PS5 and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). You play Soul, an assassin with only 66 days left to live. Combat rewards precise defense far more than button mashing. The tips below come first, and the sections after them explain each one in detail.
Spoiler note: this guide only covers the first seven regions. Nothing from later areas is discussed.
7 Phantom Blade Zero Beginner Tips
- Watch the color of the flash. Blue means you can parry. Red means you have to dodge.
- Parry instead of holding block. A parry costs nothing and damages the enemy’s guard meter.
- Punish after every Ghoststep. It puts you behind the enemy, so attack right away.
- Keep some Sha-Chi in reserve. You’ll want enough left over for at least one dodge.
- Remember blocked paths. A Phantom Edge you get later might open them.
- Fight the optional bosses. They’re where new weapons and Phantom Edges come from.
- PC players: check your GPU driver before you blame the game for crashes or stutter.
How Do Parry and Dodge Work? (Read the Flash)
Just before attacking, enemies flash a color. Reacting to that color correctly is the most important skill to learn early.
Blue flash: parry
Tap your block button to parry. Parrying uses no Sha-Chi, and every successful parry chips away at the enemy’s guard meter. Holding block slowly drains you, but parrying puts the pressure back on the enemy.
Red flash: perfect dodge
A red flash means a Killer Move, and you can’t block or parry it. Holding guard won’t help, so dodge with good timing. A common beginner mistake is pressing parry on every flash out of reflex, so learn to tell the two colors apart quickly.
Ghoststep: the payoff for good timing
A well-timed parry or perfect dodge triggers Ghoststep, which puts you behind your opponent. That’s your best chance to land hits, so take it instead of backing off.
Guard Stance is a fallback
Holding block keeps you alive for a moment, but it keeps draining Sha-Chi, and enemies can break your guard. Use it to recover from a misread attack, not as your default stance.
Controls (Community-Reported Defaults)
PS5 has three button layouts and PC keys can be remapped, so your bindings may differ. Rows marked (official) are PS5 defaults confirmed on PlayStation.Blog. Everything else, including every PC key, comes from community guides, and rows marked * have only one source.
| Action | PS5 | PC |
|---|---|---|
| Light attack (official) | Square | Left mouse |
| Heavy attack (official) | Triangle | F |
| Block (hold) / Parry (tap) (official) | L1 | Right mouse |
| Dodge (official) | R1 | Left Shift |
| Power Surge (official) | L2 | Q |
| Lock on | R3 | Middle mouse |
| Jump | Cross | Space |
| Switch main weapon (official) | D-pad Left | 1 |
| Phantom Edge* | R2 | Left Ctrl |
| Switch Phantom Edge* | D-pad Right | 2 |
| Use medicine | D-pad Up/Down | R / T |
| Interact / Execute* | Circle | E |
| Crouch* | Disputed: L3 or Cross | C |
| Mind’s Eye* | Unknown | V |
PS5 crouch: sources disagree on whether it’s L3 or Cross. Cross is also listed as jump, so check your settings before you try sneaking.
Sha-Chi and Remnant Sparks
Sha-Chi is the resource every action draws on. Attacks, blocks, dodges, Phantom Edges and combos all spend it, while parries and some abilities or accessories refill it.
- Don’t spend it all on long attack chains and leave nothing for a dodge.
- Since parrying refills Sha-Chi instead of costing it, good parrying keeps you stocked.
- Holding block keeps draining Sha-Chi the whole time.
Remnant Sparks are a separate resource that charges your Phantom Edges. Each Spark works like one charge.
Your Loadout: Main Weapons and Phantom Edges
- Two main weapons: you carry two and can swap between them.
- Phantom Edges: secondary tools with limited uses, powered by Remnant Sparks. At least one (Bashpole) opens new paths, and others reportedly do as well.
- Boss weapon drops: bosses can drop weapons, so beating them is the main way to grow your arsenal.
Main weapons are one-handed, dual-wield or two-handed. Weapon stats haven’t been confirmed, so we don’t rank weapons here and can’t name a best early weapon yet. Choose the one whose speed and reach suit you, then pick a second that covers its weak spots.
| Phantom Edge (verified) | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Bashpole | Wan Jun, the Coppermaul (Mandate Encampment) | Smashes wooden planks and weak floors |
Status Effects
Confirmed status effects: Poison, Fire, Ice/Chill, Lightning/Paralysis, Wet and Sha-Chi Burn. Some reportedly interact with each other. For example, Wet is said to put out fire.
Healing
Medicine has two slots (Upper and Lower), used with D-pad Up/Down on PS5 and R/T on PC. Heal after a parry or Ghoststep has created an opening, not while an enemy is in the middle of a combo.
Region Order
The first seven regions are:
- Weeping Creek Valley
- Crimson Forest
- Village of Lu
- Pangzhen
- Mandate Encampment
- Meigu Lake
- Mountain of Imprisonment
Pangzhen has the most listed bosses (11), so expect it to take a while.
Early Boss Rewards (verified drops)
| Boss | Region | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Peng Meng, the Axemaster | Weeping Creek Valley | Dread Axe |
| Hua, Deadly Betrothed | Weeping Creek Valley | Scarlet Wraithblade |
| The Hunt, Hunter of the Order (second fight) | Weeping Creek Valley | Hunter’s Chain Sickle |
| Stone Hand Iron Fever | Crimson Forest | Iron Gauntlets |
| Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper | Village of Lu | Bastion |
| Master Bi Hai of Kuye Temple | Village of Lu | Kuye Temple Prayer Beads |
| Yuzan, No. 3 Musician Puppet | Village of Lu | Heartrend Pipa |
| Wu Xuan, the Fallen General | Pangzhen | Wolfjaw |
| Chang Hong, the Thunder Spear | Pangzhen | Thunder Spear |
| You Loong, Leader of the Blackwater Crew | Pangzhen | You Loong’s Deluge |
Boss tip: use your first attempt to learn which attacks flash blue and which flash red. Once you know that, the fight gets much easier.
Progression and Upgrades
Single sources report the following, so don’t treat any of it as certain yet:
- Accessories come in Support, Defensive and Offensive categories and can be polished.
- Soul Tempering upgrades a weapon using materials from bosses.
- Remnant Dust buys abilities. One of them, Healing Art, reportedly adds one more medicine use (single source).
Blackstone is a confirmed key progression material, so keep it. Starting a new Cycle (NG+) is also confirmed to unlock more accessory polishing; see the New Game Plus guide.
PC Setup and the Day-One Patch
| Minimum (1080p30, upscaled) | Recommended (1440p60, upscaled) | |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | i7-8700K / Ryzen 5 3600 | i5-10600K / Ryzen 5 5600X |

- Day-one patch: about 5 GB on PC and about 2 GB on PS5. It speeds up ray-traced and path-traced rendering, improves visuals with RT off, and fixes bugs. Press reports give PS5 build number 1.301.524, but S-GAME hasn’t stated one.
- NVIDIA: S-GAME recommends a clean install of driver 617.42 instead of 621.01.
- AMD RX 9000 on Adrenalin 26.10.2: turn off High-Quality Hair to avoid hair glitches.
