Phantom Blade Zero PC Performance Guide: Crash & Stutter Fixes

Several of the biggest PC launch problems are tied to graphics drivers. Others, like shader compilation repeating and a softlock in Chapter 2, come from the game itself. Below, each problem is labeled by who is behind the fix:

Last checked: November 3, 2026. We haven’t run our own benchmarks, so this guide contains no FPS figures.

PC Requirements: Check These First

Both targets assume upscaling. The official list only names NVIDIA and AMD cards, with no Intel Arc model. Keep that in mind for the shader compilation section further down.

Day-One Patch: What It Changed

S-GAME’s launch letter, “Reason and Madness” (October 28, 2026), announced a day-one update of roughly 5 GB on PC. According to S-GAME, it “significantly improves ray tracing and path tracing performance” and includes bug fixes, which weren’t listed individually. The studio also says it put work into the game’s look when RT is disabled.

If you pre-loaded, let Steam finish this update before your first launch. New downloads include it automatically. No further patch had appeared as of November 3, 2026.

The build number 1.301.524 that appears in coverage comes from MP1st. S-GAME’s letter doesn’t mention it, so we treat it as unconfirmed.

Phantom Blade Zero Crashing and Stutter Fixes (NVIDIA and AMD Drivers)

NVIDIA: Go Back to Driver 617.42

✅ Official (S-GAME): the studio reported unstable performance on NVIDIA’s 621.01 driver and says 617.42 worked best in its own testing. If you’re on anything newer than 617.42:

  1. Download driver 617.42 from NVIDIA.
  2. Choose the clean installation option during setup.
  3. Stay on that version until NVIDIA’s next driver arrives. S-GAME expects it soon.

Changing drivers forces one full shader rebuild on your next launch. That’s expected (see the shader compilation section below).

AMD RX 9000: Sky and Hair Glitches on Adrenalin 26.10.2

✅ Official (AMD): AMD’s own Adrenalin 26.10.2 release notes (October 30, 2026) list this game under known issues for Radeon RX 9000 cards, citing “visual corruption” affecting skies and hair.

Shader Compilation Fix: Rebuilding on Every Launch

Expected behavior: the game builds its shader cache the first time you launch it and again after any GPU driver update. That one-off wait can be long.

The bug: some players report a complete rebuild on every start, even without a driver change, sometimes taking more than 20 minutes. The largest group reporting it is on Intel Arc, but there are some AMD and NVIDIA reports too.

✅ Official acknowledgement: on October 29, S-GAME’s moderator on the Steam forum logged the problem, sent it on to the developers, and requested that affected players send their specs through S-GAME’s support portal. No fix has shipped yet.

🧪 Player workaround: the -noraytracing launch option

  1. In Steam, right-click the game and open Properties.
  2. Under General, type -noraytracing in the Launch Options field.
  3. Start the game.

Before you try it:

First, rule out the normal case: if you updated your driver recently, a single long compile is expected and isn’t this bug.

Known Bugs

Mirrorwood Depths Web Softlock (Chapter 2)

Some players hit a spider web in the Mirrorwood Depths (Crimson Forest) that never clears, leaving you stuck. ✅ Official workaround (S-GAME moderator, Steam forum, October 31): stay put for a moment, walk back and forth, then interact with all three mirrors once more. If the web is still there, load an earlier save. Some players say the web came back even after reloading (thread). Our Chapter 2 walkthrough will cover the area in full (coming soon).

AMD sky corruption

See the AMD section above. There’s no workaround yet.

PS5 Balanced mode frame pacing

On PS5, Balanced mode has uneven frame pacing (see PS5 modes below).

FAQ

Is there a fix for stutter on GeForce cards?

Yes. S-GAME’s official advice is to go back to driver 617.42 with a clean install, instead of 621.01.

Why do characters’ hair or the sky look broken on my Radeon card?

It’s an AMD driver issue on RX 9000 cards with Adrenalin 26.10.2. Disabling High-Quality Hair solves the hair problem. There’s no fix for the sky yet.

The game recompiles shaders every time I start it. Is that normal?

Only after a driver update. If it happens on every launch, that’s a reported bug. Some players avoid it with -noraytracing, at the cost of ray tracing.

Has a second patch come out?

Not as of November 3, 2026. The day-one update is still the only one.

Which PS5 mode should I use?

Digital Foundry recommends Performance mode as the default choice.
